Hand thrown on the pottery wheel with lid, this piece can be used as an ipu pungarehu or art piece.
This piece depicts the grief and learnings surrounding death, connecting us to our vulnerabilities through whakapapa.
Made from brutalist clay and covered in Waiheke uku paru, from Tikapa Moana and Te Hurihi Bay, Ngāti Paoa whenua. This iron-rich Para Whenua symbolises decay and blood. Deep carvings marked to represent Uhi tāmoko made with niho taniwha patterns, which talk about protection, strength, guardianship, leadership, resilience, unity and whakapapa. Inlay made with Torea pango bespoke glaze, which symbolises death and mourning.
Her shape is that of Hine-nui-te-pō, our goddess of death and guide to the afterlife, carrying the Poutama pattern, “stairway to heaven,” symbolising learning, growth, and the pursuit of knowledge.

This piece is around 70cm tall
10% of sales will go towards kaupapa māori here on Waiheke Island.
